Congratulations to former DRTC
Student and Orange Bowl Champion Timothy Neilly who won the Boys' 18s
Singles in the 58th Annual Orange Bowl International Tennis
Championships
From the press:
Neilly's first international junior
singles title completed a remarkable turnaround following a first
round loss in the Eddie Herr International three weeks ago. Since
then he has been working with Tarik Benhabiles, who coached Andy
Roddick to the Orange Bowl title in 1999.
"I was totally negative after that
loss and called Tarik right after the match to ask for some advice,"
said Neilly. "He told me to come to Miami right away. It was time to
get some direction and Tarik has done that for me immediately."
Last week, Neilly lost in the third
round of the USTA International Winter Championships to the eventual
champion 7-5 in the third set. Seeded No. 11 this week, Neilly
eliminated the No. 1, and 6 seeds in the two matches prior to
beating No. 5 [Donald] Young [6-4,
7-5] in the final.
Russell captures junior nat'ls girls 18's title
Tennis stand-out wins
second tourney in less than a week

Grand Bahama's Larikah
Russell is on a roll!
Last week Saturday she
captured the girls 18 division of the ITF Bahamas International Junior
Open. Yesterday she clinched that division at Domino's Pizza/Coca Cola
Junior National Tennis Open for her second consecutive title.
Russell defeated New
Providence's Alanna Rodgers handily in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 at the
National Tennis Centre.
The match was a complete
mis-match from the start. Russell is an aggressive collegiate player and
she faced Rodgers who had knee surgery approximately eight weeks ago, and
who hasn't had much playing time, except for last week's ITF event, her
first tournament back since her operation.
Considering she hasn't
had as much training as the others, Rodgers played okay, but Russell's
game was just on. She was aggressive and made the most of her shots.
Rodgers won the first
game in the first set on Russell's serve, but after that early decline,
Russell never looked back. She calmed herself, appeared to get in a zone,
did what she had and swept the first set 6-1. She duplicated her first set
performance and won the match.
Russell leaves the
country today, for her final ITF junior summer tour. She said winning two
consecutive tournament titles has given her a lot of confidence as she
heads for her first week stop in Aruba before heading on to the Dominican
Republic.
"This boosts my
confidence a lot," said Russell. Both tournaments have really gotten me
ready for the summer tour, because I played a lot of players with
different games that I had to adapt to, so I'm ready," she said.
Jamaal Adderley def.
DP Choudhury
Like Russell, Jamaal
Adderley got his second consecutive tournament win.
He won the boys 14
division title at the recent ITF event, and yesterday, defeated DP
Choudhury 6-1, 6-0 for his junior nationals title.
Karltina
Klonaris defeated Daniel Thompson 6-4, 6-4 for
the girls 10 title, and Shanda Simmons defeated Kerri Cartwright 7-5, 6-0
for the girls 14 title.
Adderley commences
second title quest
Defeats Cerone Rolle in junior nationals opener

Grand Bahama's Jamaal
Adderley is confident coming off his boys 14 title win at last week's ITF
Bahamas International Junior Open and it showed yesterday in his first
match of the Domino's Pizza/Coca Cola Junior National Tennis Open.
Adderley trounced Cerone
Rolle 6-2, 6-2 in their first round boys 16 match to begin his quest for a
second consecutive title at the National Tennis Centre.
It was a fairly
aggressive match on both sides, but Adderley made the least errors, came
up with the majority of the winners for the win, as he ousted Rolle who
now looks to stay alive in boys 18 competition. But he will have a tough
time staying alive there also as he will meet Quinn Russell in their first
round match.
Adderley liked the way he
played for the win. He said he went to bed early and got a full night's
rest in preparation for the match after a stressful week of ITF play.
"I felt great going into
the match and did what I had to do," he said, but added that it hadn't
been as easy as it looked as he had to get his game under control after
making a few early errors.
An obviously disappointed
Rolle said Adderley played well.
"He was a little more
consistent than I was, and he just played a smarter match," he said.
Junior Devin Mullings
won his first match at Wimbledon.
He captured his boys
match against India's Somdev Dev Varman 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-1 on Tuesday. The
match which was supposed to be played on Monday was postponed due to rain,
and instead played yesterday. Mullings advanced to the second round where
he will meet Romanian Horia Tecau. [2 July, 2003]
Larikah Russell wins
girls 18
By SHAVAUGHN MOSS

Larikah Russell was
crowned the Bahamas International Junior Tennis Open girls 18 champion
after defeating American Alexis Dorr in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 on Saturday
at the National Tennis Centre.
Russell, who had an easy
run through the tournament said she was nervous going into the
championship match. By the fifth game, after she rushed her returns and
gave up two games to Dorr off unforced errors, Russell settled down.
Realizing her mistakes, she got her game under control and hit deep shots
which forced Dorr to miss most of her own.
To some extent, Russell
played an aggressive game, but for the most part she was able to stay back
and hit her strokes.
For the entire week,
Russell gave up only 12 games, in her four matches. Despite the scores,
she said the tournament had been competitive for her because she had a lot
of long games.
Russell liked winning the
tournament, the first of three in her final junior year, but the most
important thing for her was that she won 50 precious International
Tennis Federation points.
The win she said, has
also given her confidence as she heads onto her final junior summer tour,
with tournaments in Aruba and the Dominican Republic, after she plays in
the junior nationals which are scheduled to begin today at the NTC.
With a smile on her face,
Dorr said she had fun in the championship match and played her own match.
"Now I know what I need
to improve on," she said. "I played my own game, and thought I played it
alright, although I think I could have played a little better. But she's a
good player."
